Ten years later: Aaliyah

I looooved Aaliyah back in the day! I bumped her music, sang to her songs on my homemade mic, and made sure to learn every dance from her video. Aaliyah made it cute to be a tomboy and showed us that raunchy lyrics, being half naked, and dancing like a stripper didn't make you sexy. She did this while always seeming very down to earth and genuine.


Unfortunately, these are the type of people that are a rare find in today's pop culture world; a world where sex sells. I honestly don't feel that there has been anyone else that has taken over the urban pop scene, that has had anything close to the unique combination that Aaliyah had.

I remember when I found out that she died. I cried my eyes out as I heard it on the radio and then called my friend Alhaji, also an Aaliyah fan at the time, to tell him of the sad news. Ten years ago, at the tender age of 22, her life was over.

Till today, I still play her music and sing her songs. I don't know if I have heard a song of hers that I don't like. Continue to RIP Aaliyah!
