I'm trying out Kimmaytube leave in this week. Check out the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXi2k4cFFhI . Kimmaytube has become one of the most popular youtube natural haired guru's. In a short period of time, she has grown extraordinary lengths because she has mastered the art of protective styling and retaining all of her length.
Remember, as I've mentioned in the past, your hair is constantly growing. It's just how much of that is actually retained that makes the difference. The leave in was developed on the basis of pH balance and it's importance in closing the cuticle (remember when I mentioned that?). Thus, the most important parts of the leave in are the aloe vera for the acidification and cuticle closure & possibly the castor oil which acts as a sealant. The good thing about this leave in is that it moisturizes and seals in one step. Make sure you check out her videos.
Here's what I did.
1) Pre-poo'ed with Yes to cucumbers conditioner mixed with coconut oil. Covered my hair with a plastic bag and tied a scarf around it & kept it overnight.
2) Next day, I took sections of my hair and sprayed with a mix of water & aloe vera and then detangled. I used my fingers and then my modified denmen. I'm probably going to try using paddle brush next since just about everything easily snaps my ends including the denman unfortunately. That's the downside of having fine strands. But it detangles my hair so well though!
3) Twisted my detangled hair up and proceeded to shampoo w/ Cream of Nature Shampoo and then followed with Miss Keys 10 en 1 deep conditioner which was left on under a shower cap for 15 min with my heating cap.
4) After rinsing out all of the conditioner and being done with the wash process, I then unraveled one twisted section, applied my modified Kimmaytube leave in and then made smaller twists with that section. The final twists were about medium size and I'll be wearing them with the ends tucked, all week.
How I modified Kimmaytube's leave in:
-Used Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship Leave in instead of Kinky Curly Curling Custard
-Used castor oil & olive oil instead of castor & jojoba
-Used Organic Aloe vera gel instead of juice
I immediately noticed a difference in the softness of my hair & smoothness of my ends when I applied the product. I'm going to try her method of only moisturizing with water(i'm going to use distilled water) in between days and see how my hair handles that with this leave in. If I do need to reapply, I'll only do it once between now and next wash day, making sure to wet my hair first. I'll keep you guys updated on the final outcome.
